I Can Put That in the Dishwasher?

I love a clean house, not a huge fan of cleaning so I love a quick cleaning tip.

So, today I am going to open your eyes to the wonder of the dishwasher. We know about its ability to crush dinner cleanup time. However, let’s talk about some of the other things it can clean.

I would recommend washing these items in their own loads without dirty dishes. Just like you sort your clothing loads – sort your dishwasher loads.

You can wash these in the dishwasher:

Baseball hats – they sell ball cap washers to help keep the shape during the wash

Rain boots – remove any liners and lay flat

Flip-flops – hook them on the top rack

Tools (including garden tools) – metal or plastic. Towel-dry after to prevent rusting

Glass globes light fixtures – instantly brighten any space by clearing the gunk and dust

Ceramic cabinet knobs – they can go right into the silverware basket. Really freshens the cabinets up.

Hairbrushes – if it’s made of plastic great, if they’re made of wood or natural boar bristles don’t put those in the wash

Shower heads and faucet handles – this can wash with pots and pans

Pet bowls and toys – see baby toys

Fan grills, switch plates, vent covers – plastic, aluminum or steel are good to go, leave enameled, painted or plated items out.

Personal Care Items – toothbrushes, soap dish, nail brushes, bathtub plugs…

Shin guards, knee pads and mouth guards  – definitely on their own wash cycle

Action figures and other small toys – put small pieces in the silverware basket or a lingerie bag so they don’t get lost in the wash

Baby toys – a great way to sanitize and clean after a week of slobbering and chewing them

Potatoes – making mashed potatoes for 20 this Thanksgiving? You’ll be happy you saw this. Please don’t use detergent, it just won’t taste the same.

On a side note, I was at a wedding last year and over heard a woman discussing her cleaning ritual of putting the toilet seat in the dishwasher once a month. I don’t think I could stomach that, but if you want to try it, I applaud you! She did mention she ran it alone and ran a cycle after to clean the dishwasher.

DON’T wash these in the dishwasher:

Cast-iron, enameled-cast-iron and copper pots
Formal dishes and nice flat ware
Wooden spoons
Good kitchen knives and steak knives
Crystal glasses
Insulated mugs and containers
Brass items
Wooden cutting boards
Disposable aluminum
Nonstick pans
Disposable plastic containers
Aluminum cans

Happy organizing!
