As the end of 2011 approaches I start reflecting on the past year and setting out my goals for the coming year.
The benefit of solid short term and long term goals in your life are absolutely necessary – they provide a plan and the directions to get there.
Reflection is such an important part of the goal setting process. Among other things, it allows me to put the past year in perspective. I can read through journal entries, blog posts, vision boards, facebook status updates and get a pretty good idea of the highs and lows from the year.
It’s easy to get caught up in the day to day and forget about the small successes we have in life, work and family. Setting aside a time to write down an overview of what you accomplished and what is still left to accomplish in the coming months is a great routine to create.
When you are in the middle of an organizing project you can lose sight on the big changes you’ve made because you can’t stop thinking about what is left to do. Reflection can help you keep this short-term goal in perspective and show you the big impact of small changes.
Here are a few suggestions on working reflection into your routine:
- Keep a journal throughout the year – it doesn’t have to be a pink velvet diary – it can be a word document on your computer, but a central place that you can gather your thoughts from time to time and write about the happenings in your world.
- Have goals to reflect on – It’s more meaningful if you are reflecting on specific goals – if you haven’t ever formally set goals use your first reflection time to brainstorm long term and short term goals – what does your ideal life look like? What does your ideal closet look like? Set out a plan to get there!
- Be honest with yourself – Use this as the time to analyze your past year’s performance in an honest way. How productive were you? What behaviors or patterns need to change to make 2012 the best year yet?
